About Yirgacheffe
Irgachefe (also transliterated as Yirgachefe) is a town in central southern Ethiopia, located in the Gedeo Zone; it is also the administrative center of Yirgachefe woreda (or district), the coffee growing area we are all familiar with. Yirgachefe is bordered on the south by Kochere, on the west by the Oromia Zone, on the north by Wenago, and on the east by Bule. These are all household names for us within the specialty coffee world. Coffees from Yirgacheffe sit at an elevation between 1800 and 2200 meters above sea level and are grown predominantly by small holder farmers.
For many, the cream of the Ethiopian crop is Yirgacheffe, considered by many to be the finest Ethiopian coffee with its very distinctive floral bouquet, rich body & a fragrant aroma.
Interestingly, the three major “brands” associated with Ethiopian coffees; Yirgacheffe, Sidamo & Harrar are trademarked names with the rights owned by Ethiopia.
