About Guatemala Providencia

La Providencia is located in the Municipality of San Pedro Necta, in the department of Huehuetnango. The farm is found at an altitude that ranges between 4,500 and 5,000 feet above sea level, and is nearly 105 kilometers from Huehuetenango, and 330 kilometers from Guatemala City. Almost the entire farm is cultivated, either by Catauí or Caturra coffee trees.

It is a long and precarious drive off the main road to the San Pedro Necta region (where much of our Huehue from Fedecocagua comes from) of Huehue, but worth it. Atop a high ridge is the large Finca La Providencia. This is truly high grown coffee, and with the mill situated near the top of the farm, cool temps mean slow fermentation and a winey acidity in the cup. The usual Huehue floral fruitiness is there along with a heavy hint of clove and a long cocoa finish.

About HueHuetenango

Huehuetenango is both a city and a municipality in the highlands of western Guatemala. It is located about 250 km west from Guatemala City on the Pan-American Highway & the last major city before the Mexican border.

The coffees from Huehuetenango can be exceptional for both its consistency and quality; some believe this is from the higher altitudes and remoteness of the region and that is has been least compromised by “advances” in mechanization and hybridization. While “Antigua” may be the better known Guatemalan region, many have begun to identify Huehuetenango as their favorite.

This is the highest elevated coffee region under coffee cultivation in Guatemala, and is also the driest. It is also by far the most rugged area in Guatemala, with coffee cultivated in broken and very steep terrain. The region is protected from frost, allowing coffee to be cultivated up to 6,500 feet. Huehuetenango is extremely remote which requires nearly all producers to process their own coffee. Luckily because of the region’s terrain, and the multitude of rivers and streams in the area, access to water for processing is available to most farmers.
