About Tanzania Mbeya Mutwari AB Washed

Smallholder farmers who produce our ‘Tweega’ and ‘Mutwari’ coffees are represented by self-organized producer groups. These groups have been assisted by our export partner. They work beyond the standard lending and purchasing relationship with producers and with over 5,000 farmers from 50 groups enrolled in an Agribusiness Training Program. These farmers are learning how to maximize their income potential by improving their yields and leveraging transparent business practices to secure fair payments and quality bonuses.

Both ‘Tweega’ and ‘Mutwari’ lots are sourced from around the Mbeya region. Mebeya is nestled within the stunning Livingstone Mountain Range in the nations South. The area is characterized by rolling mountains, high altitude and rich volcanic soils that produce a vibrant flavor profile reminiscent of a Kenyan or washed Ethiopian. Historically, the large majority of coffee produced around the Mbeya has been home-washed due to the lack of washing stations, quality incentive, organisation and cooperation among producers.

Tweega and Mutwari lots are essentially separated by cup score when coffees are delivered, processed and evaluated by Tembo. Tweega is the higher product tier, while Mutwari is a tier below with a few lower quality tiers below it.

About Tanzania

Tanzania produces between 30-40,000 metric tons of coffee per year (70% Arabica, 30% Robusta). The three main Arabica growing regions are in the North/Kilimanjaro, Mbeya and the Matengo Highlands (Mbinga).

More than 90% of Tanzania’s coffee is produced by 400,000 smallholder farmers. Larger estates are found in Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Mbeya regions.

The harvesting season in Tanzania usually lasts from July to December, though slightly earlier in the case of Mbeya. Green coffee is sold either through the Moshi auction or direct to buyers. Coffee is shipped to buyers out of the major ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga.
