About Ethiopia Shakiso Kayon Mountain Natural

The Kayon Mountain Coffee Farm is located in the Taro kebele of Odo Shakiso, in the famed Guji growing region of Oromia. This area is known for gold and titanium mining, as well as its native forests.

Kayon Mountain is a local family-run enterprise with over 30 years of experience in the production of Guji coffees. Throughout most of this history, they have managed wet & dry mills throughout the region and established a close network of neighbors to supply cherry. Eight years ago the first tract of land for their own farm was purchased, which has now grown to encompass nearly 500 hectares across three locations. Ismael Hassen Aredo manages the farm with a keen eye for detail and quality.

The family’s rich experience has included many years of seed selection and nurturing of heirloom local varieties. Two spring fed nurseries are maintained to for the planting of seedlings in the loamy-clay soils of Kayon and coffee is grown in a semi-forest environment under native Acacia trees.

This particular lot is a sun-dried natural, comprised of fully ripe cherry carefully dried on raised beds for an average of 21 days. The fully dried cherry pods, or jenfel, are conditioned and milled at the family’s dry-processing facility in Guji, and then trucked to Addis Ababa for final sorting and quality control prior to shipment
