About Sumatra Sipangan Bolon
We have been working directly with Dody & Fendi for the past 3 years, where we source these coffees directly and exclusively with a group of about 360 farmers, working about 400 hectares of land in the Sipangan Bolon region (near the tourist town of Parapat on lake Toba) in North Sumatra.
The current crop from Oct-Nov harvest is among the cleanest and most distinctive coffees we have bought!
This direct relationship between grower, exporter and importer is vary rare in Indonesia; most coffee is traded through a myriad of hands until one of the few large exporters blends it together and ships out the old style Mandheling.
By working directly with small village producers we get to understand their coffee production process, their quality issues and then implement often simple solutions to improve consistency and quality. They also benefit from our involvement in providing advice on quality systems and simple agronomy lessons. They also love to meet the people buying their coffees.
The Sipangan Bolon coffee is one of the lower altitude coffees in Sumatra, but certainly one of the most consistent due to the diligent work of fedi the mill owner/manager. The coffees are always consistent from batch to batch and season to season which is why this coffee has export markets from Europe, Japan, USA and now of course in Australia.
About CV Yudi Putra
All our Sumatran coffees are direct source through a small family export company and our good friend “Dody Sayhrum” from CV Yudi Putra. YP have an extensive network of small micro-mills in the Sumatra lake Toba region of Sumatra and Aceh.
These guys are really breaking the mold of the old style Mandheling and Lintong; they have watched and reacted to the demands of the specialty coffee world and are working hard on quality systems, strict buying processes, separate lots and even down to micro-milling. They are fortunate to own their own farm near Jumeroba in Lake Toba, which allows them to test and trial new ideas like honey processing, raised bed cherry drying and even traditional washed and fermented coffees.
Dody and his family really are leading the charge for specialty coffee production in Sumatra and MTC are proud to be working directly with them on improving qualities from this amazing region of the coffee world.
